How to become a qualified skilled carpenter

most carpentry jobs will require experience not qualifications You firstly need to decide what sort of carpentry work you want to do: first fix, roofing, second fix, kitchen fitting, cabinetry etc etc then you need to decide whether you can afford the lower rates of pay during the transition...

    Bandsaw Issues?

my thoughts: 1) check the top wheel and the bottom wheel for runout -ie have a dial gauge against the wheel and rotate it by hand on a new machine it should be pretty close 2) if you are using a blade as wide as say 20mm you might find a modern welded bandsaw is unable to tension it...

Buying cheapest wood for woodwork practice in the UK

Maybe you could a post on your local Facebook village group. There will be carpenters and builders doing jobs with offcuts and they will be chucking them in the bin. As somebody mentioned above you could do a Google search for joinery companies, if there’s on locally call in and ask

Garage change of use - any pointers?

£5k would be the material cost perhaps….so the cost for you to do it, with maybe the price for an electrician to domthe notifiable stuff. More like £15k for a builder to do it As it’s not attached, it is viewed as an outbuilding, so exempt from b/regs unless it’s over 15sq metres and under...

A little truth for a change.

I watch a YouTube channel called Vasya in the hay, which shows life in rural Russia. It does look pretty medieval. 40 million Russians have an outside toilet with no running water. Lovely country though even the smallest rural houses have a nice big plot with big garden…..sometimes I feel...

Surely a huge gap in the market?

High accuracy and repeatable are features that require precision engineering and expensive components You can have light and cheap and inaccurate Or you can have heavy, expensive, accurate You can’t have both Take a 6” surface planer, if you want precision you need cast iron tables 60”...

A little truth for a change.

despite the idealistic fervour surrounding banning oil, the reality is the world simply cant end the reliance on oil as a base chemical for so many industries anytime soon. probably 50+ years we should convert to renewables for energy and keep the oil for other stuff

A little truth for a change.

They can’t be implemented, nobody can make it work. I support fair wealth distribution and state ownership of utilities. But above all else I support the art of the possible…..which in this febrile political landscape is not a lot.

    Helping out a family member

It was a £10k or more job all day long, only cowboys will be doing it for the price they want to pay. I bet they will get a far smaller job done then claim they got it cheaper

    Helping out a family member

You should’ve sent them a nice reply saying: “I’ve heard there are some fantastic tradesmen on rated people / mybuilder / checkatrade who do a fantastic job at ever so reasonable prices”…….and let them find a cowboy who will ruin their garden.
