Any cheaper alternatives to the Kreg / DeWalt quickflip systems

Trend and Makita do them. The Makita one used to be the best as it is smaller in diameter than the Dewalt and had nicer countersinks. However, they seem to have changed the design, used to be a nice brass collar and would last well. The one I got last time had an aluminium collar and horrible...

    Lay out pens?

    Fibre tipped drawing pens maybe.

    Pivot window/door options? Advice needed

How about using friction hinges (like on upvc windows) with a fire egress function so they open to 90 degrees. Ollie

    Pneumatic toilet flush button.

My Brother went to Japan and was really impressed with the crazy robot bidet toilets they have there, he considered getting one in his house when he came back. I personally think its asking for trouble and overcomplicated in the same way as our car seat annoys me with its slow electric motor to...

How to drill into a concrete lintel?

I have been using the Bosch multi material bits for this sort of thing. I find mostly you don`t even need hammer. I hardly get the SDS out now unless its for really big things.

    finish for CNC carving

The end grain bits where the carving has exposed it will absorb more finish and naturally darken more anyway. It is very dependant on the design. If you have enough depth then you could sand half a mm of the flat part after applying finish to take it off.

    CNC Machine

Looking good, I trust you have a dial indicator for getting it spot on. I certainly think this was a good way to go in a value for money sense. Be interested to see the performance and reliability of the all in one controller. Will you be building a tank on the bed for coolant for cutting...

    Rust Remover--'Jenolite'

Evaporust is supposed to be good stuff. I agree that the new Jenolite is no good.

    Chisel Buying Advice

MHG are good value, similar to Narex they have wooden handles with hoops so you can use a hammer. Had a set for years they are good steel and sharpen up nicely. I can't remember where I bought them but they don't seem to have a UK distributor. might have bought mine from Germany pre brexit...

    Anyone tempted ?

I can see little practical use for it, I have had no real problem with the normal pins or cross stops.

Perhaps, but this was above the DPC by quite a bit.

    Dry rods

Wow I am clearly in the wrong business. Dry rods are £24 for 10 (at wickes so probably way less for them) and that will cover 1.2 m so generously thats £96 quid for materials leaves enough for a very nice new SDS drill and bits with a couple of days pay to drill 40 holes. Absolutely mental...

Alternative to the festool ETS EC150

I have a Triton version with normal orbital mode and forced rotation. It is a bit of a beast and really needs holding on to in forced rotation mode. Very effective but I actually don't use it a huge amount. Much prefer the combo of a 4 inch belt sander and a mirka orbital. Ollie

Trend Make Domino dowels now! Just found out

Best way is to buy the spindle cutters from Whitehill. Then you can just make any size and any wood you need.

    Hardwood frame for secondary glazing?

I suggest using accoustic laminate glass, it is worth it for the noise reduction. Your suggested method would certainly work. I would however not use butyl tape but rather something like an EPDM rubber gasket or a Schlegel aquamac type seal. These can both seal without sticking to the glass...

    Dry rods

I am having a similar quandry. Our house is 1930s with a hung floor over concrete oversite and does have a cavity. When we bought it 8 or 9 years ago I removed the ground floor including joists because there was rot in the floor. Once it was all out I put in some telescopic vents because the...

Stopping epoxy leaks with glazing putty?

You can get fillers to make the epoxy thixotropic, it might be colloidal silica or those micro bubbles I forget now. Effectively you should be able to modify the epoxy to be thicker and not run out of the cracks. It might need priming ( wetting )with a thin epoxy first to aid adhesion, and...

Stopping epoxy leaks with glazing putty?

I am not sure the putty will work here, my guess is that the epoxy when wet will seep through where it is sticking to the wood. You might be better off with parcel tape, the cheap brown one is good.

Total Newbie to CNC and Lasers

Hi David Have a look in the CNC and laser section, there have been many discussions about the topic. I also recommend a browse of these two forums. https://www.mycncuk.com/index.php https://www.cnczone.com/forums/ There is a lot of knowledge there from real experts, I learned a lot from...

    Router plane on sapele

As said this is the way Sapele can behave. I suggest routing it a bit deeper (with a router or trimmer) and insetting a thin sheet. Could be a contrasting wood so it looks nice. Normally a cabinet scraper or very high angle plane can tame it a bit, though not much help in the bottom of the box.
