    Bandsaw blade centreing

Can someone clarify where the blade should sit on the top wheel of a bandsaw. I've seen it said that the whole blade should be centred on the crown but also that the deepest part of the gullet should be in the centre of the crown. Which one is correct ? (if any). I'm using a 3/8th 6tpi blade at...

    bowl gouge fouling

I think the OP is having difficulty with where the bevel is supported. I've been doing the same! I thought the bevel should be supported under the gouge I. E at 6 o'clock position rather than at the side (9 oclock). I had my headstock rotated as my blank was larger than the throw of the lathe...

Using traditional grind bowl gouge.....Video needed

I'm trying to find an instructional video on bowl turning using a traditional grind gouge. All the ones I've found so far are using the fingernail type grind which I am told is not good for beginners (not turned for a decade or more so consider myself a beginner). I need to check my technique...

How rapidly should a blank be turned

I'm reading that sanding sealer should be applied before the CA glue as it could stain. I'm finishing with hard wax oil. Will I have problems with this over small areas of sanding sealer?

How rapidly should a blank be turned

Thanks Eddie. I'll do that. I see you're not too far from me (20 miles). Do you attend any local turning club?

How rapidly should a blank be turned

Eddie, the checks have developed on the unturned side of the blank (see images) so not due to overzealous sanding. My original design has a "skirt" around the edge so the top of the rim will be sunken so I can lose some of the checks. I am hoping that I can work round them and disguise any...

How rapidly should a blank be turned

Thanks for the informative reply Chas. The moisture content on delivery was about 9 percent (measured on the periphery). It's actually gone up a bit now and is at 10 percent. On my meter anyway. Blank was not waxed although website says it should have been. I've only turned the bottom of the...

How rapidly should a blank be turned

Not in RPM. But time elapsed from acquisition of the blank to the finished article. I have been turning a 15 inch by 2 1/2 inch oak blank that I had bought from an online retailer. I turned the base after a few days and finished it with hard wax oil a few days later. I have been leaving it in a...

    Chuck jaw compatibility

Can anyone tell me if the Axminster jaws will fit the Record SC4 chuck? I note that the Record jaw carriers have a Grove in them whereas the Axminster chuck jaw carriers have a "post". It looks like if I use the Axminster jaws with the SC4 the only thing locating the jaws would be the screws.

Finishing mounting dovetail socket before chucking?

Sounds a good idea Chas, but my lathe headstock is not attached to the lathe bed. The bowl diameter was too large for the swing of the lathe so I had to rotate the headstock and reposition the lathe bed bars (an old Coronet No.1). But a useful thing to remember!

Finishing mounting dovetail socket before chucking?

Thanks Simon. I haven't done any turning for a decade or more and needed to make some friends a thankyou present. It was a good excuse to recommision the lathe. Now that I'm retired I can spend a bit more time turning. Useful comments from you both. Chas, I don't fancy making a jam chuck for...

Finishing mounting dovetail socket before chucking?

I have a large (15") oak bowl on a faceplate at the moment and have finished the underside. I have a 100mm dovetailed socket for my new chuck (when it arrives!). I'm using a hard wax finish. Do I put finish in the socket at this stage or do I leave it until the bowl is complete? I'm not sure how...

    fruit bowl finish

Ah, I hadn't thought about the "bad fruit" scenario. Thanks for the advise. I have an oak bowl I did about 20 years ago and just sealed and waxed. It has stained somewhat but I have never retreated it! I'll check with my local finishers tomorrow to see if I can get any hard wax oil locally.

    fruit bowl finish

I'm turning an oak fruit bowl as a present. What finish would best suit this use. I generally use a shellac then wax finish on turned items but wasn't sure if this was applicable for fruit.

    bowl gouge grinding

Dalboy, what an excellent link. Many thanks. I'll see how I get on with the standard grind.
