    DIY Welder!

Portamig and Oxford are the same make, out of the same factory, you just pay a hell of a lot more for Portamig. You can get thinner rods (1.6mm) for thinner stuff but they're a pain to use and stick more than they strike. For what Lastminute wants, better off with one of those cheaper inverters...

    Grinder grease

Er, I chucked some brown stuff I found behind the press brake into the gearbox of the last one I dismantled. Ran fine. It was of CV consistancy too. Be right!

    small gas soldering torch?

Mine works the same way. The plastic ignition guard slides down and locks until you press the rear button to light and then as you say you can press the side button for continuous flame with a gas control on the other side. The red one on the side above the continuous button is nothing more than...

    small gas soldering torch?

And that's EXACTLY what I have! Haha, 'cept mines green with red buttons. Also purchased from B&Q about maybe 10 years ago. No idea on price, it was a Christmas present. Edit: Found a pic. Datestamp says 30/11/2005 so can't have been Christmas. I have no idea why I took a picture of it. Or why...

    small gas soldering torch?

I can't find one on Amazon (looked ona few pages) but check out "BernzOmatic" I have one that is free standing like the one you're after and it came with a whole host of 'ends' for it. I've also got a pen type one from Aldi that actually isn't that bad, the tips for electrical soldering heat up...

Hacksaws: How to choose 'em, how to use 'em, + other "stuff"

I'd say not, it wouldn't last very long in a proper sheet metal shop so it's no use for that either! :P Might be nice with a bigger capacity. We have an old (probably 80's!) Bosch nibbler that manages 1.5mm stainless just fine and it's no bigger than a standard jigsaw. Regarding the clutch nut...

    (SOLD) Record Power BS350S Bandsaw

Sod XD Been saving up for a BS300E (£500) and this being a better model at a better price.... well... too late. If for any freak reason the sale doesn't go through, I am interested. Thank you. Matt

What tools does every welder need?

I've heard so many stories about people getting arc eye, feeling like your eyes are on fire, being nearly blind like the above... how long are people managing to look at the arc for to do this much harm? I've only ever got a "slight tiredness" to my eyes maybe once or twice but I've caught the...

What tools does every welder need?

Also for refreshing contact tips on a mig. I can't think of anything else to suggest, as I'm sure he'd have everything needed before you start getting into the gimmicky sort of rubbish that a sales rep will try and sell you.

    Sourcing brass tubes?

It was to give an aged/ weathered look, to replicate the natural patina that brass develops over time. The trough was a simple wooden frame, clad with (of all things) old laminate floor planks. It was then lined with a large thick polythene sheet. It was probably about 5 foot long, a foot wide...

    Sourcing brass tubes?

"Patination fluid" is also a wording you should be looking for. I was once involved in the contruction of a brass handrail for Leeds Castle in Kent and we had to make a big trough for dipping the parts, we built a jig to hold as many as possible and each 'dipping' got timed so they all came out...

    Ventilation when MIG welding

I try and do very little galv welding, not always easy when there's the offchance of having to make a box out of galv sheet. At work we have a fume extractor with a movable hose and big funnel that you place over where you're working. This is fine for something small where you're only doing say...

    Milling Machine for Steam Engines

Place I used to work used to have an A&S 2E with a vertical head, had all the gubbins to slide the top bit back across and use as a horizontal too, although we never did as it was only ever used for simple work. I once spent 3 days just making glazing bars on it, all replicating a Victorian cast...

    Tyler Variable Speed Bandsaw

I have absolutely no idea! I've not bothered looking for the blades, Tuffsaws may sell them but again I've not looked. There doesn't seem to be much information about Tyler around so trying to find an image of the original blade guides would be problematic.
