    Primer question

First off, I’m no diary or paint expert. Just from my amatory experiences😉 Water based paint is IMO absolute rubbish. You can’t burn it off, it forms a hard shell that when it cracks water gets underneath and the first thing you know about it is when rot holes appear on the stuff. To get it off...

How to enthuse a 4 year old

Tell him he can’t touch anything it’s only for adults ! That should do it!

    Opinions, please

It takes longer to do something poorly than well! If you have to machine a surface then do it properly and accurately. The time and cost dealing with returns and dissatisfied customers is far greater than the extra few minutes to dial in a machine properly. If you haven’t any pride in your...

Why are router usually lifts so expensive?

Modern cutter projection will be the same on a spindle and a router cutter. One rotates at a maximum of 10K, the other 16K RPM. One tells you it can cut bits off, and as a consequence you use shaw guards or a powerfeed the other you stick your fingers mm away from the cutter holding tiny bits of...

Why are router usually lifts so expensive?

A spindle in IMO the most useful and versatile moulding machine that you can own. Iys far more versatile and capable than any router table. I have written a thread on the spindle moulder, which might be of interest. Spindle moulders can do anything a router table can do and far more besides...

    New House, New Workshop Build.

The workshop is getting a little closer to finish. The UFH piping has now been I installed and pressurised ready for the screed. The pipework has been divided into five areas so that internal walls could be added at a later stage to create temperature controlled rooms.

    Proposed workshop build

I’ve built a workshop that’s 140m2 under permitted development. A shed without submitting plans has a certain size constraint, but if you submit your plans you can have almost what ever you want (there are some rules). The permitted development means that it will be approved, but they in essence...

    concrete/cement hardener

There is a friable layer on top of concrete that needs removing to allow the paint to adhere properly. If it’s not, as I understand it, it’s the reason painted garage floors don’t last very long.

    concrete/cement hardener

I thought you had to sand or shot blast the surface of concrete before painting to remove the loose surface stuff.

    New House, New Workshop Build.

The floor is starting to go down. It’s DPM over the concrete pad, followed by thick insulation rated to take the weight of the machines I plan to accommodate and then a layer of radon gas membrane. The floor insulation interlocks. Over this will be the under floor heating (yep, I plan on working...

    New House, New Workshop Build.

The ceiling of the new workshop is insulated and plastered, it’s been first fixed for lighting and now just needs paint and second fixing. The ceiling will be white, whilst the beams will be varnished and left natural colour.

    New House, New Workshop Build.

Well, just hobby stuff! But I managed to fill it with machines and wanted more room! I think you just grow into what ever space you have available.😂😂🥴 The ‘old’ workshop was £10K seven years ago to buy. Thats the structure, insulated cladding including insulated roof lights, electric insulated...

    New House, New Workshop Build.

It’s been a while since I last posted about my workshop build. A lot has been happening that’s caused me to not be focused on it including the losing after a short illness my closest friend, mentor and truly loved father. With the massive help of @Sideways and another close friend and my...

Does being right or lft-handed determine which way round a room you go when painting ?

You should start at the furthest point from the predominant light source and work towards it. Usually this is the corner closest to the door. So, you work both clockwise and anticlockwise. Same for papering.

    Mens Sheds

I retired early and am very fortunate to have a large well equipped ship. I looked at opening it up to let others use it /pseudo men’s shed. However, looking into insurance / HSE compliance, dust extraction inspections, electrical checks, fire escapes, emergency lighting, training, PPE….the list...
