    Sock blocker

You are on the right track. Sanding the edge is critical, then put on a few coats of waterproof varnish (sanding between), this will stop snags. I made a set for my wife whi knits a few years ago, they have held up well. I used 6mm baltic birch. Pricy but worth it for this application...

    Cheap Systainers!

No, they are clearly labelled “biological substance catagory B”, they were for transporting live covid tests. https://www.ed.ac.uk/files/atoms/files/packaging-labelling-reqs-catb-infectious-substance.pdf

    Diesel Fumes

Hmm, it still doesn’t describe the experimental set up, other than “DE (nominal concentration: 300 µg of particulate matter of 2.5 microns or less [PM2.5]/m3) exposure occurred for 120 min”, which links to this article: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.3109/08958378.2011.562256 which...

    Diesel Fumes

The article doesn’t really explain how the ‘booth’ works. I wonder if the oxygen content of the air with the diesel fumes was low, which would explain the temporary effect.

    Festool Domino patent

£500 when I bought mine -6 years ago. In that time it has more than paid for itself in saving materials (mostly from stopping me screwing up) and saving my time so that I can get on with something else.

    Disappointed with Axminster

Just to check: the instructions for each grinder mechanism are on each page where they are sold; were the wrong instructions on the wrong page, or did you go to wrong page and download instructions for a different grinder than you bought? If the first one, then I agree that is not good by Axi...

    Question for a clockmaker

Looking at the manual, they have 2 different battery systems taking 3 batteries in total, one for the mechanism; one for a light. Have you tried replacing all the batteries? https://www.punkt.ch/repofiles/Manuali/AC01/13-AC01_QG_en.pdf

Axminster Basingstoke due to close because of "dramatically increasing costs"

The Axminster branch near me in North Shields (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) was in a retail park when it first opened, but moved to a trading estate after only a few years, I suspect the rent was a lot cheaper. It made no difference to me because when going there I’m not going for any of the other shops...

Can anyone confirm what these are called?

I have bought them from DC Iron to make the ball-ends for vice handles. They are about 50p each for the size you want. https://www.dciron.co.uk/products/sp30?_pos=58&_sid=36a22319b&_ss=r

Turning Garden Ornaments in to Working Tools

Hi, they are definitely not metric. I don’t have the vice anymore. The jaws were held on with 5/16” bolts (according to my notes above), probably BSW. There is a smaller screw holding the quick release plate that I think may have been 1/4”, but I can’t recall the thread pitch.

I only want to turn wood into dowel, otherwise round bars

Short answer, yes: a person’s ability to make accurate parts on a lathe far exceeds the potential movement of the wood during seasonal variations (a percent or two). Longer answer, still yes: there are many types of joint, but predominantly they are either glued or glue-free. 1) For glued...

I only want to turn wood into dowel, otherwise round bars

Being able to sharpen the tools is a critical part of woodturning. The ony exception to that is for the people who use replaceable-tip carbide tools, but the cost and quality and ease-of-use are very different. How much wood do you cut before you need to sharpen a normal chisel or bench plane...

I only want to turn wood into dowel, otherwise round bars

Short answer: yes, it’s possible. Buy a couple of 2.4m 44 mm square, planed timber from B&Q (£10 each), and turn it to the dimensions you need, you will get 14 per length. You may master it in half a dozen tries, or it may take you closer to 30. If you can’t do it by the end of 2x of those...

    Screwfix screw pricing

I suspect that they will be back down in a month; the same thing happened to me just before Christmas when I had a trade pack in my basket, but they were back down again a couple of weeks later.
