The hinges on some of our windows are rusting badly and making the windows stiff and difficult to open and close. Up until now I have cleaned them up when I paint the window, greased the pin, and they are then fine for a couple of years before they need doing again. However I'm getting a bit fed up with doing it, especially the upstairs ones where it is an absolute pain to lift the window back in to position whilst simultaneously screwing it back into the frame, and I'm increasingly aware that I won't always be able to do it, and also I shouldn't need to. This is a typical example - not one of the worst - but the easiest to photograph.

SWMBOs answer is to spend the thick end of £10k on 12 replacement UPVC windows and 2 external doors throughout (yes - really), but given that the wood is still pretty sound, there has to be an easier/more economic way. Are hinges like these still easily sourced, and are they available in something that won't rust? Looking for something that is not necessarily maintenance free, but lower maintenance, and something that will leave rather more change out of £10k !!!!!!!

I am online via mobile phone, so sorry i cannot provide a link but if you go to screwfix website, then ironmongry, then specialist hinges, you should find what youre looking for

Its a lift off hinge screwfix seem to do only 4 inch though, also make sure you get the correct hand.

Personally Id get the chisels out and replace them with stormproof hinges.

Brilliant. These look just the job. 18 opening windows x £8.95 = £161.10 . I like that solution much better than SWMBOs £10k one :D :D

Thanks for the prompt reply Sim.

Lardman - The existing hinges are 4" so should be a direct replacement which has its attractions, but in the interests of making sure I do the right thing what are the advantages of "Stormproof hinges" please?

Glad I could help.

I don't know how you could "get the chisels out and replace with stormproof hinges" though. A stormproof hinges works only on a stormproof window, as the casement would be rebated to accomodate the hinge. Like shown in this drawing:

What you have there is a traditional casement window, which only butt type hinges work on.

The hinges looked cranked around a rebate when I first looked - but now you've pointed it out it looks more like a stain run...

I'll go and stand in the corner and face the wall for a bit
