Can I make these doors using an mdf base with planted on mdf rails and stiles, then lipped with some hardwood for on the hinge side?

You most certainly can. I've made three of these for my workshop. As long as you lip em up as you said you'll be fine.

Probably look nicer if you lipped both edges, when you come to paint

Definitely. Also it'll give you a fighting chance of getting a mortice latch fitted.

Fantastic, thank you.
Any suggestions on thicknesses,
18mm base 6mm rails and stiles?
How about lippage with?

20mm thick solid lipping. Leave the stiles and top and bottom rails overhanging by 10mm all round to create a groove all round the outside. The lipping should then be tongued into this and glued with a D4 glue.
I know it sounds a bit flaky, and it certainly isn't the ideal way to go about doing an internal door but it does work. I know because I've tried it in my own workshop as an experiment several years ago.

I'm assuming you're asking because you don't have the means to make a traditional door, in which case it's an acceptable alternative. (just)

It will be as heavy as an oak door, so choose hardware accordingly.
