I inherited this blank nearly 10 years ago and have never really managed to ID the wood.
It is now going as a present to a mate next week and I can guarantee that someone will ask what the wood is, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Please don't look at the turning too closely!

The colour is very much like the photos, more reddish along the grain but being mich darker on the end grain. The light flecks are noticeable in both grains.

+1 for Padauk based on the first picture.

It's also known as dye wood because the dust is hellish red stuff and it stains everything.

Does that sound right?

Yep Padauk. It will have golden pearlescent flashes in it when just finished but sadly will go a dull brown over time.
