Looks like chestnut. Does it have a slightly orangey tinge? Chestnut usually does

+1 For chestnut, I do find it difficult as it is so similar to oak.
Regards Rodders

Oak was my first thought but it doesn't have the rays I thought oak normally has. I'm not sure if I would say it has an orange tint but I maybe need to look at it outdoors.

The photo was under fluorescent light on a mobile so the colours may not be great!

On another note, how do you guys know this stuff!?!?

Another clue is the smell when you cut it - chestnut smells more of tannin (sort of bitter) and ash smells less strongly and slightly "nutty". Cheers, W2S

Tried another image, this time outside and looking straight at it.

I'll try the tannin thing later.

Same piece. Might be the other side.

Still says chestnut to me. The tannin test sounds a good idea
