Wood ID

Evenin' all........ could anyone hazard a guess as to what this bit of wood is.

The colour as it shows on my screen is pretty accurate. It's obviously a hardwood as it's very heavy.

it is hard to tell if there is stain or just natural varnish. My first reaction was Elm.
