red meranti.

I have seen stuff called white meranti also.
Sapelle is harder than meranti and looks to have a tighter grain and sometimes ribbon striping from what I've seen...
Most of the meranti I have will jack plane easily in one direction without alternating grain....not needing to plane the other direction.

Whether it be Meranti or Sapele, I snagged a load of it and I think I'm going to make a small kid's stool from it.

I was just about to ask a similar question regarding a coffee table top I found in the attic of our house. But having seen the above pictures I think I have my answer. Lovely piece of wood, I've made a couple of floor threshold strips with it.
