This plane appears to have had a chequered existence. It is a rather a “Bitsa”: – the iron is by Alex Mathieson & Son, the cap iron is by I Sorby, the front infill is non-original and there is no visible maker’s mark. The dovetailing is to a good standard. The obvious fault is the broken lever cap. I thought it would be worth making usable – details to follow.

Will be watching with great interest. Repair or replace ?

The other way round is suprisingly common, I. Sorby Iron and Math Cap. Then again might just be me spotting it more since thats the variation on my first ever infill.

I'll be watching with interest too. And having followed your other projects I have no doubt that you will do a good job on it.

Thanks Mr_P and Andy. I couldn't think of a way of repairing the lever cap that would be strong enough and look good so I chose to replace using one by Bristol Designs. The screw that came with the new one has a 5/16" BSW steel threaded part but I thought it would be nice to re-use the screw from the original cap, which is threaded 7/16" BSW. I drilled and tapped the new cap to suit then found that I had to remove quite a lot of metal from the underneath to allow enough clearance for the iron to inserted in and removed from the plane. I also made two screws to hold the lever cap in the plane and tapped the cap to suit (the thread is No.2 BA).
