Hi there forum folks,

I think a Wood Section in the forum would be a great idea and a fantastic thing to have here. I think it's one of those areas which is always of great interest to everyone and I always enjoy reading about identification, Treatments, Uses, buying, Drying/storing and tree milling Etc "you get the idea"

I Think it would be a valuable area for all and an area which you can never know enough about.

thought this might be of some use to you and others in the forum. Its something i always keep track of in other woodworking forums, I'm a new user to UKW and prefer it by far and its my "local" but think the forum would benefit from

I would be prepared to assist if need be!

What do you think?

Cheers,
tony Wink

What say you?

All in favour Say "I"

Someone, Ironballs I think, had this idea a while back. A 'Woodipedia', if you like. Good idea, but are you volunteering to look after it and keep it up to date?

Yea sure,

No drama's - it just gives me a better excuse for being on the internet and away from my household obigations.

Don't know about calling it woodipedia i think Wood would suffice, "Simples"

I just re-read your post. You were asking for a section of this forum to be dedicated to wood species? I doubt that's going to happen. It'd be more of a ghost town than the design forum (which turned out to be a flop).

Nice idea, but this needs to be an independent work. IIRC there are some similar sites out there on t'internet.

not species, No, I'm not looking to talk about tree hugging or the like, just a good resource for all things wood related and kind of breaks the forum up a little.

Maybe "timber" would be a better name for it,

TIMBER
seek and give help, make observations and statements, etc. regarding timber. Supply, availability, characteristics, swap/buy/sell timber with other members.
For those who mill their own using chainsaw mills, bandsaw slabbers

Here are thread questions/info might expect to see in the "timber/wood" section. These are all threads In the timber/wood section of other woodwork/carpentry forums.
* treated pine?
* i got a good deal on this,
* I want to cut the mother in laws tree down to make a new bench, whats the cutting storage process.
* what timber for external cladding and....
* What to do with crack in Blackwood slab?
* white pine or yellow pine for stud
* Project Help/Questions
* Nail stains in cypress pine "help needed"
* Cypress for sale
* Vaneered Plywoods
* soft v hard decking
* what wood for a picnic bench
* exterior wood for project - Preserve or use hardwood
* WTF B&Q wood prices up by 20%

Perhaps a dumb idea but worth a shot.

I could see it being useful, if not busy, especially to beginners. Could have it as a section or a sticky. Charley or the mods could set it up - and if we've a volunteer to maintain it, well why not ?
