I am putting together a table of timber yards, with information from members who have actually visited the yards. Can you please help with information about Scottish Wood @ Oakley?
(To VIEW the full list of yards click here)
(To ADD a new yard/s please post here after checking that it is not already in the table.)

Are they hobby friendly?

Can you self-select or is it by appointment?

Will they deliver?

Do they have online ordering?

Are prices displayed at the yard?

Do they sell domestic hardwoods?

Do they sell other hardwoods?

Do they sell softwoods?

Do they sell manufactured boards?

Do they sell turning blanks?

Are they a one-man-band or a small, medium or large yard?

Will they cut to length to fit in your vehicle?

Do you have any comments?

Thanks for your help,
Neil

Are they hobby friendly?
Yes. I am a hobby woodworker!

Can you self-select or is it by appointment?
I have done both - placing an order by e-mail/phone I got some green larch sawn for an outdoor project.
I recently went and hand picked some oak boards.

Will they deliver?
Not sure. I have always gone to the yard

Do they have online ordering?
No. E-mail and phone.

Are prices displayed at the yard?
They have a show room of prepared timber which has prices on. Sawn stock in the drying sheds does not have prices on but website does have the min-max price per cubic metre

Do they sell other hardwoods?
No. Home grown hardwoods only.

Do they sell softwoods?
I have bought larch from them but it is mostly hardwoods

Do they sell manufactured boards?
Don't think so

Do they sell turning blanks?
Not specifically, but they do have smaller offcuts in the showroom.

Are they a one-man-band or a small, medium or large yard?
I would call it a medium yard

Will they cut to length to fit in your vehicle?
Don't know. Never needed to ask

Do you have any comments?
Very friendly place. You tend to be left to get on with it - last time I visited I spent over an hour there choosing timber - but you are expected to keep things tidy. The showroom is great for choosing finished timber but they have a bigger collection of larger, rough sawn boards in their drying sheds.

They are also only open Mon -Thurs which is a pain for me as I have to take a morning off work to visit the place.

Some more notes as I stay reasonably close

Are they hobby friendly?
Yes quite a friendly bunch

Can you self-select or is it by appointment?
You can generally self select from their showroom but I think they sell a lot to larger companies and some of the stuff that's in the showroom is of varying quality. They must be VAT registered as they add VAT to prices.

Will they deliver?
If its a big enough order I think they can sort out delivery but normally not something they do - they machined up some oak facings when I was refurbing the last house and delivered those but I'm only a few miles away.

Do they have online ordering?
no

Are prices displayed at the yard?
in the "showroom" but from memory ex vat

Do they sell domestic hardwoods?
Yes only domestic stuff

Do they sell other hardwoods?
no

Do they sell softwoods?
some larch boards

Do they sell manufactured boards?
no

Do they sell turning blanks?
well they sell lumps of wood that are suited to turning/ carving

Are they a one-man-band or a small, medium or large yard?
medium

Will they cut to length to fit in your vehicle?
I would think so.

They have handsaws behind the counter in the showroom which they keep for customers to use.

As well as mon-thu they are open the first Sat of every month 9-2.

They are a great bunch of people who do a lot for the community and for forestry and sawmilling in Scotland.
