I've got some of the above that will make ideal bowls, but have never turned it, what's it like to work with.

I wouldn't turn it! Best thing to do is send it to me (hammer) :mrgreen:

Black walnut should be nice to work with although I've always found it has a good chance of cracking when it finally drys and gets to the rooms average humidity.

Its been in my workshop for a good number of years under of lot of other stuff, found it a few months ago during a clean up and reorganisation of the shop, so it should be nice and seasoned.
 
If it's the American walnut it turns well and has the added bonus that it's not as attractive to woodworm as English/European walnut.
