Remote or foot control for Record CL4

When hollowing or working on inside of bowls I find the on/off switch on headstock a bit of a pain to get to. So,I'd like either a remote control or a foot switch.
I don't 'do' electrics,so it would need to be very simple to install or doable at reasonable cost by electrician.
Any ideas ?

My CL4 has an input on the speed controller for a foot stop looks like the old phono style jack. Have a look at yours. Should be able to pick one up relatively cheap.

Mine is the 2016 model using the vslk control-no sockets at all on it.

If you fit one between your lathe and the mains, you'll have to reset the NVR switch on the lathe each time you switch it off.

Certainly interesting,but I could see that remote getting lost among shavings and other clutter.
Think I'm leaning more towards a foot control,especially when a hollowing tool is deep inside a form and I get scared trying to get it out without damaging rim :D

If you fit one between your lathe and the mains, you'll have to reset the NVR switch on the lathe each time you switch it off.

Worth being aware of the caution on the amazon site generally:

The product is not recommended for use with or in the proximity of power tools, industrial equipment, machine tools or for other equipment with powerful motors. The high inrush currents on these devices can cause signal interference

Also, specifically Devices with a nvr switch this will not work + for your lathe it will trip / reboot the inverter each time which I don't think is what you need.

Thanks Simon,have read the thread and have asked Record for wiring diagram of controller.
 
Just wire the power lead through a cable outlet fixed to the front of the bench. Cheap and easy. I have one in the middle of the front and right at the end in case I want to stop it when boring deep holes. It doesn't entail any rewiring of the controls or anything other than the lead itself.
 
I did something similar with my first Wivamac lathe and modified the existing controls to add a remote control. It was just a case of providing a second set of controls (speed control, forward/rev/off switch and emergency stop) which could be switched instead of the original controls. It's pretty straightforward to do. I did mine before Wivamac started offering remote controls - I think they borrowed my idea ;)

A simpler version of the above could be modified to work from a foot switch.
 
In my opinion a foot switch can be dangerous especially if it the type used for sewing machines whereby the harder you press, the faster the machine goes. Even with a straight on/off foot switch I can envision all sorts of circumstances where you wouldn't want the lathe to start unexpectedly.
I've had one hanging on my wall for over twenty years which I intended to use with a fret saw but I seem to remember it was very tiring keeping the switch depressed.
 
This thread https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/reversing-the-record-cl4-t92686.html describes the wiring and function of the controller on the CL4. All you need is a normally-on, momentary-off pushbutton switch wired in series with the existing stop button. You could fit a jack socket with a shorting switch in the control box, so that when the remote stop is unplugged the lathe still works normally. (ie terminals short when no plug, terminals separate when the plug is pushed in). The current is trivial, so the socket, plug and switch don't need to be anything special.

This is still on my "to do" list because I haven't yet decided the best way to wire a remote speed control.
