Glossy without being slippery

Here's an unusual one for you: I'm after advice on achieving a glossy finish without reducing the friction of the timber.

Ordinarily, if I wanted a glossy finish I would generally go for a sanding sealer then some wax, and buff away for a few minutes. In this particular application, I want to achieve much the same look, but I can't reduce the surface friction. The timbers are oak and beech.

a lacquer buffed to a gloss? I only have experience of melamine, but others may also work

There are specialist non-slip varnishes designed for wooden stairs. Never used them so can't comment on performance.

It's not for stairs. But yeah, I'll see if I can find a small tin somewhere and do an experiment.
