cap iron screws

hi all

as some of you know I'm shortly to embark on making some infill planes I now have most of the pieces required , I'm still awaiting for the remaining bits to arrive , but was think about blade thickness which i intend to use 4mm steel for the back blade, I'm going to order some more steel for the chip breaker probably 3mm but this set me to thinking about the cap iron length of screw and need to source some longer screw bolts to do the job any ideas where i can get longer ones , if not does anyone know what thread they are, many thanks in advance to anyone who knows .hc

I was wondering why you were bothering with cap irons then I remembered you were going to use a Norris Adjuster?

Googling "Cap Iron Screws" revealed a few suppliers, some for Record/ Stanley and some for Clifton - but no indication of length?
I measured a few old ones I have, they have about 1/2" thread length with 5/8" heads - I have not got an Imperial thread gauge but the threads were approx 6mm diam?
What sort of length were you looking for (4+3 +?).
If worse comes to the worse they could always be turned on a lathe from some larger stock and threaded to suit say 6M?

length need to be a min of 7m + can always cut to final length .

hmm interesting what you just said i just got the old digital caliper out and check a cap screw out of the donor plane i 'm going to use it being a record plane no t5 and the cap screw head is 3/4" or 16.25mm with a thread length of 4.85mm and a dia of 7.95 or 3/8 (still dont know what thread was used though) all different measurement from your cap screw I didn't know they differed that much, think it's probable better to waite till the norris adjusters arrives the head size of the cap screw has to be a snug fit to that don't really want any slack in the ring cap screw holder on the end of the adjuster . hc

hc - probably the best bet - my BD ones measures 17.4mm and the RI one 14.2mm (both ID's).

If you have a friend with lathe I am sure a screw could be easily knocked up and then tap the cap iron to suit?
I could even do one (albeit slowly) on my Unimat if you get stuck?

Ever since finding that unidentified plane on the weekend i've been looking on the internet for infilled planes and stumbled on plans for one! I was looking for steel to build one but haven't been able to find any. i found some Norris style adjusters, not cheep but look very nice. Where did you get your steel?

These planes looks absolutely stunning, but they seem to sell for a £1000 or more, for the one i want. At least if i built one i could do it a bit cheaper i think.

HC, i'd have a check of your callipers or how you are converting between metric & imperial

3/4" = 19.05mm not 16.25

3/8" = 9.53mm not 7.55

and I'll let you off a 7 meter long screw as a typo Wink

I got my steel for the blades from (tilgear) looked up high carbon steel there right at the bottom of the list of other bits and pieces that comes up , don't know if it's any good for what you want to make the bodies from hc .

ps where did you find the adjusters to ?

oops , jason your dead right, i was reading it of the scale on the back of the caliper 16.5 is the size of drill required for the hole. hc Laughing

I get the distinct impression there are two different screws being mentioned here.

HC I think you are referring to the screw which clamps the blade to the 'chipbreaker', the dimensions you give sound about right. I have one to make for a new 'chipbreaker', like as not I'll use an 8mm thread form, 5/16" or there abouts.

Harbo's dimensions sound as if he is referring to the lever cap screw, which of course screws into the sole of the plane in a bailey type.

Probably made everything less clear.

I didn't have to look hard for adjusters so i'm sure you must of already seen these ones.

I seen that one. The fit and finish didn't look as good. It's so hard to tell from the little photographs they use. Thanks very much. Also thanks Harbo i've been having a good look through their site.
