My workshop is usually knee deep in shavings & dust & while wearing a mask prevents me from breathing in any harmful dusts it’s always been a messy place to construct projects, NOT ANYMORE!

I purchased the Record DX5000 as it features 2 powerful motors (1000w each) which really does give a vast amount of suction, its also a high pressure system so you can run any length of flexible piping around the workshop without sacrificing any performance.

Fitting together was really simple & consists of 2 filters, 2 paper filter bags, 1 cloth filter & of course the main unit which looks like its been made out of an oil drum, first of all you fit the paper filters over each one of the main filters which look the same as an air filter on a car, then you push these onto the motor units, then the cloth filter fits onto the main drum, this unit uses standard polythene bags to collect the dust & this fits onto the base with a neat ribbon clamp, finally the tops just sits onto the main oil drum base & its ready to go.

In use you really notice the difference the extra motor gives, you can run the unit with just one or two motors as there are separate switches on the top of the lid, with just one motor running it was doing the job very well but upon switching on the second motor it really does boost the suction, the flexible pipe at one point was pulled out of my hand due to the suction, its THAT powerful.

I am very happy with the DX5000, its not too noisy either, the manual says approx 80db but of course you could always just switch on one motor & still get adequate suction for most machinery.

The Record DX5000 also comes with a 5 year guarantee which seems a very long time to me, I’m not sure what other extractors come with but this seems the longest guarantee I have every seen, its also made by Record themselves in Sheffield as apposed to the cheaper "Select" range which comes from China.

Your probably thinking is there anything bad about this extractor? Well so far I haven't found anything that I don't like, if I were to be really fussy then I guess the manual could have been a little more helpful & there were a couple of slight marks in the paintwork along the top rim although this is probably a result of parts rubbing together in the box during transit, the only other thing is when the unit is mounted to the wall I feel the inlet pipe should have been positioned to the left or right of the unit as it does tend to stick out a long way from the wall & runs the risk of somebody bumping into the pipe, however I have no regrets about buying this model & recommend it to anyone.

With regards to build quality I would give the DX5000 a 9 out of 10, the yellow top is made from thin plastic which is the only cheap part on the unit, the manual has a parts list in the form of an exploded diagram & from what I can see every part can be replaced, the manual also shows a brief section on how to replace the brushes in the motor which by the way have a 2000 hour life.

One thing you should be aware of though is when I was looking into these extractors I found details on the DX5000 in a Record brochure & it said this unit filters down to 0.5 micron & below, however when I received the unit I found its actually 2.5 microns so I don't care much for their approach on advertising which only misleads people, isn't it funny how a misprint always makes a unit appear to be better rather than worse, funny that!!

I have yet to use the extractor seriously but I can tell its well up to the job & probably a little overpowered but you can never have too much of a good thing, its a little pricey but as soon as you use it you can tell where your hard earned cash has gone, its a wonderful extractor which not only looks nice but performs way better than I expected & with a 200 litre dust collection capacity it should be a while until I have to empty the bag.

So a big thumb up to Record for creating this superb dust extractor, I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone wishing to purchase a dust extractor.
