    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

I’d have to send it to you palletised I’m afraid 😄 I was aware it was a pattern used from the RD and crossed over but didn’t know it was used for a few other machines. You have tons of knowledge on Wadkin. What Wadkin kit have you got Vann? Scotty

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

The fence assembly on this machine is epic. No other word for it really. Measuring in at 37” Long and 6 and 1/8” high, it is barely liftable, it really is a struggle to move it yet it is effortless to move in and out on the rack pinion running gear when it’s on the machine. It was buttery smooth...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

So the infeed top table on your machine is able to tilt, this makes the top tables out of level to one another, creating draft on the workpiece. Draft was needed to aid in the removal of a pattern piece from the sand when casting parts. You’ll have a hole in the top of your table with a nut you...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

I fitted the block back into the machine today and all went well. I shall get some decent photos of all the assembly for you soon, for now all I’ve got is the block in situ and a few shed shots. It’s an immense thing, it’s 5” around, about 35” long and very very heavy. I could just about lift...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

The machine breathes again. Just a very short clip of the gearbox in action without the block fitted. The background noise is the generator running it as I’m still working on it in various places.

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

Wow, thank you for the kind words it’s much appreciated, i am really pleased this has/will be of some use to yourself. I can see from your photo you have the pattern makers canting front table on your RM, amazing. The FM also had the option for this feature, being the last of the true pattern...

    Cars that make you smile

I’m not particularly into cars myself, I’m a Vincent motorcycle fanatic and anything that’s old with two wheels. However my old mans got loads of cars and my favourite to drive is this Lotus Cortina mk2. Although I am not smiling in this photo 😅 it does tend to make me smile when I drive it. It...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

It’s been a short while since I updated on here, works been busy etc etc. I have still been working on the planer as and when I have been able and I am nearly at the end of what’s been a wonderful rebuild of a truly magnificent machine. I have turned my full attention to the block and wiring it...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

A quick-fire update on the planer, the end draws close. I now have the castings painted and mounted that carry the top tables and facilitate them sliding up and down. The electrical covers are painted and nearly ready for refitting along with the Brookhurst isolation switch which i am taking...

    Building Bridges

Yeah it’ll be the usual template on top of the stock and run round on the spindle. I’ll put the 4” block in but instead of the ring fence I’ll have to use the follower. I’m not the biggest fan of the follower as I can’t regulate the cut like you can with the ring, however, it does have its plus...

    Building Bridges

Thanks Johnny. The size of the main beams off the top of my head are 5.1 long, 300 deep and 100 thick. The Oak is arriving from France in 2-3 weeks so it’ll all kick off then. Thanks for the interest

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

more progress on the FM, it’s really starting to look like a planer again and my big pile of old cast iron is getting smaller and smaller. I’ve fitted the block castings back onto the machine, they also take the feed gear and pressure bars, so it’s been a big big leap forwards getting them...

    Building Bridges

That’s the great thing with the rod Niall, it became apparent quickly the computer had a hard time spitting it out. Sections 1&4 are the same dims and 2&3 are the same, so I’ve made both pairs run the same, it looks ok. It’s funny you mention the Swastika as we were having a chat about this at...

    Building Bridges

Not on this bridge as although it’s big for me on my own, it’s relatively tiny and no issue to get the timber in one piece. We have however made a 22m bridge many years ago, that was massive and laminated. Scotty

    Building Bridges

the rod isn’t calculations as such Mike, in most instances the drawing (if I’m lucky enough to get one 😄) has all the salient details on it, it’s just a ‘to full scale’ drawing to enable me to actually make it accurately. When I prepare my various components from rough sawn, they will lay...
