    Makes a lot of sense. I have never seen a fence like this. Sounds if it is an after market item. I find if you look for twists, cupping and bowing of the wood to rip or cross cut will dictate whether it is safe to cut or not.

    Mitre saw - Rutland V Makita

    The Dewalt DWS780 12' compound sliding mitre saw is what I use on job sites, and also have the same in the shop. Model number might not line up with same in UK. Very good rugged and dependable saw. The shop saw is about 20 yrs and site saw is about 13 yrs.

    Make sure you screw some plywood and or lumber between the studs where you anticipate mounting cabinets, shelving etc.

    In one of my past shops which had OSB sheathing on the inside I simply used a latex caulk. As already mentioned the joints were near invisible after painting. Even less noticeable once you hang things on the walls.
