    Router is extremely loud

. Working on your own it isn't too bad, at least you can brace yourself for what you know is coming, and wear ear protection. Also your quiet thinking periods will not coincide with the router being on. However, if you share a workshop space, even with ear defenders, it can be impossible to...

    "I Feel Their Pain"

I've just checked the cable again in the daylight, and blow me I found it ! Mid way along a triple and earth there was a little bit of chewing on the outside insulation. I stripped it back to reveal the inside wires are slightly damaged with a tiny scorch mark on one of the grey wires. Edit...

    "I Feel Their Pain"

If they chew through a cable one would hope that it proves fatal, though with a water pipe they'll just get wet. o_O .It's a constant battle trying to keep them out of the attic. They get into the foundations of the house and then up the inside of the cavity walls to the main attic and...

    "I Feel Their Pain"

That was my initial thought, though looking at the cable I replaced I can't see any obvious sign of damage. All is working as it should now and I've made a drawing of the layout so next time things should be a lot quicker.

    "I Feel Their Pain"

I have just spent the best part of a week sorting out an "earth leakage" fault in the lighting circuit in the small annex attached to our property. It was simple enough to work out that the fault lay in the two way switching circuit that controlled the main light to the bedroom. The problem...

After 40 years - its' died

Can't you take one of the hook type screws from another square and make it fit, or even make one from a bolt or length of studding?

    Narrow Lean To Shed Project

Rather than using timber cladding you could use corrugated iron sheet. It will probably work out cheaper than wood and you can buy it ready painted in various colours.

Recommend me the best countersink for wood / ply

The true snail countersink bit, that I remember using in a brace, at school, all those years ago, is a cone with a single groove cut in its side. Which is a lot more snail-like in its appearance The ones with a single hole through the cone seem to be a cross over from metalworking. Though...

Recommend me the best countersink for wood / ply

The best one I ever had was given to me by a friend who worked in aviation. It was the cone shaped variety, with the single hole through at an angle, that is quite common nowadays. The rose head ones do judder in the holes. One of my books on blacksmithing talks of making them with irregularly...

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

I would have to question these particular assumptions. - 1) How can Trump have anything to do with Europe? In the context of America, Trump is a symptom of its malaise and decline, not its cause The Le Pens, in France, were prominent long before we had ever heard of Trump. 2) The failure of...

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

Please, can we be spared from this bickering. I for one would like to read things that are relevant to the debate. Mod edit : this^^^^ Noel

    Butt hinge size

If in doubt, just add another hinge or two. If the doors are real wood then you can expect them to move over time. Then you may well have to plane them at some later stage to stop them sticking. This is one of the advantages of adjustable hinges and lay on doors. One often allows bigger gaps...

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

This is the dilemma of all elected governments. they all need to raise taxes, but don't want to loose popularity by doing it. To quote Jean-Claude Junker - " We all know what to do, but we don't know how to get re-elected once we have done it. " :giggle:

Most practical way to add unit on top of a desk?

Given the restrictions, fixing with dowels should be okay. After all, they are just for locating the units as they are being fastened to the wall. It also causes the least damage to the desk top. You could , of course, just fix a bottom on the units and have them resting on the desk, but still...

    Memorial cross

This is the sort of job , that with a bit pf care you should easily be able to carry out with hand tools. I would cut the mortices on both sides of the cross piece before it's chamfers are cut and planed. It is probably best if they are not too wide so that a sloping shoulder can be formed all...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Well done - very sculptural, but simple... I expect there will be some movement across the width of the doors. but you should easily be able to accommodate this with the hinges you have used.

Any comedy cartoon makers on here?

I was trying to work out the logistics of moving 50 anvils. I remember transporting one in the boot of my old Rover, but moving 50 - that's something else.

Solution for rats in my garage

Very much in line with the OP's euphemistic first post to this thread - in Welsh one of the words for a rat is "llygoden fawr" which translates as " big mouse " :giggle:

    Cabinet doors wider than tall

If the concern over proportions is from an aesthetic point of view, then the alcove framing. could be widened to alter the proportions of the doors. Failing that a central muntin might help with the look of the panels.

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

Looking at the posts on this thread one can clearly see, that there is a tendency. to demonise the opposition and treat them as less than human. As if we were dealing with cartoon characters , rather than real people. Whilst this might be useful in warfare and make it easier for us to kill...
