I tried mops on an 8” grinder and it was a hassle with it not being on a pedestal. If you’re contemplating a lot of polishing which is very therapeutic then the free standing machines the way to go- you can’t stall the mops, if mule skinners are attached rusty metal can be shiny within minutes...
Have a look for second hand Ikea Ivar shelving it’s plenty strong enough adjustable and modular and won’t cost anything like making your own with new timber. If it’s grubby just paint it
Have a look at Union Jubilee style pedestal machines. I bought one and use it almost every day, very powerful takes large and small mops and will run all day. So heavy it doesn’t need bolting down, runs very smoothly in single phase

Headstock and tailstock and the 2 feet are not brass. If casting from patterns / with free brass -it would make sense to make everything from brass?
It’s a strange one!
The bed is quite sophisticated for a home machinist. See hollows underneath There’s no lead screw so not a lot of point in machining it all out and it would be an impressive block of brass to start with. I think the paint will have to come off to see if there are any more clues hidden!
