    Odd bits for a brace

Reamer, metal drill, not a drill at all( think its a nail with a hammered and shaped head). countersink. The brace is the cordless drill of the past and would be called upon for much more than just woodwork. I think.

    Maybe a hand tool?

Remember with the top one you aren't trying to push the drill through. Just apply constant pressure and as the drill cuts your hand will slowly turn as the drill drops.

    catnap

For those questioning my choice in slabs... I lifted a patio and relaid them... there is a full flight of steps to carry them out... Laying them was the easy option. I can only assume they choppered them in. I was very grateful for her assistance as its quite hard to be angy at an apprentice...

    catnap

I have been trying to lay a patio this weekend reusing 600x900 slabs AKA "cooncil slabs" they are bloody heavy and bloody awkward even with two its stressful. 20kg of romanian rescue hound taking every opportunity to walk through the bedding, lie on the slabs etc was not the helping hand she...

Help identifying small lathe with brass bed and carriage

Brass is a weird choice isn't it but its relatively easy to melt at sensible temperatures? Possibly a diy or down time copy of a steel or iron equivalent which was used as a pattern.

    A £5 vice

Fair enough. Two interesting cameras though. Both early attempts to make smaller cameras. The ensign is a british design and build thats probably 100years old and probably still works 120film is still in use. The zeis ikon baby box tengor is an early one i think again probably works takes a...

    Bolting together 2 x 2 by 4s

You don't need to hang the new joists under the old ones, you can stagger them in-between. But really the answer is to ue acoustic hangers as other have suggested. You just want the structure to be decouple from the roof structure and acoustic hanger achieve that perfectly adequately. If you...

Who knows what this Vise (Vice on your side of the pond) is for?

I don't think it's bike wheel related, you would expect the vice bit to accommodate an axle not be flat jawed. Also there are loads of bike wheel diameters so a fixed length is pretty unuseful in any kind of bike workshop. And there would also need to be a fair bit of height difference to each...

    Record 044 without cutter clamp

I made one from those drawings a few years ago. It wasn't actually that easy to mate them together. It locks it down fine but it's a bit of a fiddle getting it to clamp on narrow blades, it tends to want to walk out as you tighten the screw. As per usual never got round to finishing it and...
