    English workbench (Rex Krueger plans)

I think you will find any sort of wax finish to be too slippery for a bench surface, I have always just slapped a couple of coates of sanding sealer or shellac on, this helps prevent glue sticking, and keeps the wood from getting grubby. Ian

The other bonus is that my home made one is only Pennies to make!

    Maguire Pin Less Leg Vice

I designed but never built a foot operated quick release rack system for the bottom of a leg vice, fairly simple as are most good things. No time to give you it today as I’m driving to Heathrow. Will draw it up tomorrow if it’s wanted? Ian

    Chestnut Zipper Dining Table

That’s a large clean plank you have there, not sure if you know but I’ll say it anyway just in case, after splitting the plank down there is quite a high likelihood of the boards cupping so best put them in stick with a weight on for a few weeks till they have stabilised. Also you will need to...

    No 3 plane too small

Yes too small, I think that’s why it isn’t as widely used. Most people use a blockplane for small work, but I have trained myself to us a Nr 4 for everything. Also never used the long planes either, it’s easy enough to get a joint on long plank edges with a 4. Ian

Hello from Scotland [and perhaps soon to be Australia !]

Welcome and congratulations on your impending move, presumably you can take some hand tools with you? Otherwise, I was pleased to find that Axminster are really good at sending stuff overseas, and you can pay in whatever currency you want. Well it certainly worked for me in the States, I was...

    Table saw safety

It depends on the saw, most larger ones do, but you could probably bolt a piece of ply ( in long grooves for the adjustment) onto the face of your fence. This is my saw - sorry it’s the only pic I have. You undo the angled levers and slide the ally section.

    Table saw safety

Kickback is often caused by the wood misbehaving between the saw blade and the fence, usually after it has passed the centre of the blade, this is why it is recommended that the fence is adjustable so that it can be pulled back towards you out of harms way. But how far to pull it back? If a...

WILL BE SELLING SOME TOOLS IN THE NEAR FUTURE, HEREFORD AREA

Firstly I really feel for you and your situation, so sad. Don’t be put off too much, the majority of members aren’t able to get the VAT back so go ahead (after you have written a few more messages) I think most on here are fair decent people. Ian

    Table saw safety

I see you’re in Leeds, that’s where I first used a Tablesaw, at the City of Leeds, Carnegie Teacher training College in Headingley, thinking back I was 19 so that will be 50 years in September. As you say Happy Days! Ian

    Table saw safety

Yes, two birdsmouth Push Sticks, one pushing against the fence and one pushing towards the blade, it’s now a staggering 49 years! and no accidents on a Tablesaw, using this method coupled with a fence that is altered to length depending on the work I think I probably never will have an...

    Joke Thread 4

Given a choice between the two dangerous looking things in that photo I think I’d rather take my chances on the wood scaffolding!

Metal stud work in garage conversion

I used it once when I needed a fireproof fake chimney breast making. I think if you use it all the time and you have the correct chopping machine it’s probably not too bad, but without it leaves very sharp nasty edges, also I think it does mean you can make a thinner wall. If it was me I would...

DIY an exterior door on a stone house

Might just be the photo, but it all looks well out of square from here, If it is and it’s an old quirky building you could just fasten the frame to what you have and then make a quirky door to fit it! If that doesn’t appeal and it all has to be square you may have to do quite a bit of packing...
