Woodworking & craft shows and events…

I went to Harrogate Toolfair today, it was okay but nothing amazing. I go every year and always say I won't bother next time but still end up going, it's the free entry, free parking and free bacon sandwich that sucks me in. I stocked up on Big Wipes as they are always on a good deal and bought...

An Oak table, nice straightforward job, it's a bit Rag 'n' Bone Brown so something different for me. Customer is having a new kitchen and asked if I could use the the old Oak top from the island and some Oak from a surround that was taken down to make a table. What we started with There...

Is a full size guide rail worth it?

Had my 3m Festool rail a good few years, just checked the price and they have gone up a bit, sure it was less than £200 when I bought it. I can still picture all those years ago the delivery driver walking down my drive with this long box on his shoulder which was drooping down at the ends 🙄...

Is a full size guide rail worth it?

I have a 3m Festool rail which I wouldn't be without but I do have plenty of room in the workshop to spin it around and store it, and I use it enough to justify the cost. I get perfectly straight cuts with the rail, it always puts a smile on my face when I use it.

    Blum hinge mounting plates

Fitting the 0mm plate to a 9mm block of wood gives the same offset as using a 9mm mounting plate.

    Table saw safety

I think the fact that the CSC SYS 50 is such a small saw will make people naturally put their fingers closer to the blade, there isn't much table in front of the blade which makes using push sticks more awkward. I would suggest leave the guard on, use push sticks and set up some kind of...

Mitre saw - Rutland V Makita

@Jfw2708 you say the saw is unstable, in the photos there is a small foot/bolt at the front which should rest on the surface you are using to support the saw, is this in place and actually resting on something? It looks like you can push the saw back to the wall but need bench space in front to...

    doors and window frames

Are we talking single or double glazing? I'm not a fan of internal beading for glazing but there are reasons for and against both methods. Most of the draught strips need a groove cutting in the window frame before they are assembled so not easy to retro fit. You can use a wiping seal like...

    doors and window frames

That looks a fun project. Are there any totally original windows left to copy? The windows in the photos have been messed around with, looks like someone has taken the easy route and replaced the bottom of them but left the Gothic arches untouched. You will be fine with the machinery you have.

    Pivot window/door options? Advice needed

Unfortunately because FENSA is self certification it doesn't seem to be a guarantee of quality work.

    Pivot window/door options? Advice needed

Any replacement window should be signed off by Building Control or done by someone who is FENSA registered. If doing it yourself through building control you will need to prove it meets the regs for U values etc plus they will charge you something like £200 for the application.

    Integrated fridge with inset doors?

Thank you everybody, I am probably overthinking it. I just haven't found any info on where the cabinet door hinges need to pivot in relation to the fridge hinges, maybe this is how the slider thing works giving some leeway so that it doesn't really matter within reason. I'm ordering the...

    Integrated fridge with inset doors?

Making a start on this now and still not really sure what I'm doing 🤔 It's going to be a fridge with sliders (when it eventually turns up) and I'm stressing about the pivot points for the hinges and what will work. The cabinets are going to be bought in and I'm making the face frames/doors...

kitchen build by the new yorkshire workshop

I watched about the first hour and a half of this last night, going to watch the rest later this evening. His videos get a big 👍from me.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

The doors only have about 1mm clearance, one of the reasons they wanted a bespoke one making was all the cabinets they had seen were a bit "gappy" so I had to make sure they fitted tight. Most cupboards I make have a cockbead around the edge (and between the doors), despite looking fancier the...

    Workshop side door

Some people call them hinge bolts, they go on the hinge side in the edge of the door to add a bit more security. One way of breaking in is to remove the pins out of the hinges, hinge bolts mean even if you do this you still can't gain access. You can buy them like this...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Glazed cabinet, it's only plain but took longer than I expected to make. The doors, frames and shelves are Maple and the sides Birch ply, in fact the only bit of MDF I managed to sneak in is the back! Got to include a photo from the workshop. Not quite finished yet as waiting for the...

Safely cutting lap joins on table saw

I would suggest you do them with hand tools, if you have a mitre saw (that trenches) or a router they could be used to speed things up a bit. Avoid doing anything on the table saw that involves removing the guard.
