    THE FOURTH OF JULY

Keep the tone of this thread civilised please. I've deleted a handful of posts from the last day or two that are snarky and likely to encourage more such in response. This thread isn't going to OT2, rather 1 week bans will be issued without any other warning. We have weeks to go yet, thanks for...

Planer thicknesser mobile cart 600 kilos

That type of machinery skate is very versatile. I get why they have become popular. Rated for 4 or 6 tons APIECE, pallet jack type rollers below so they don't damage your floor and the black disc is steel and rotates freely on ball bearings even under load. What's not to like :-)

    Joining temporarily

Three of us having helped the widow of a friend dispose of his workshop in the past year I'm very aware of how much effort is involved in this. It's not something that most people would volunteer to do twice. I'd encourage @Annette to take up the offers of help with thanks. The most important...

    Cars that make you smile

When mine went to scrap at 160,000 miles, I took out the two front seats and put them on 5 legged office chair bases. One for me, one for my dad. It was a C plate but that seat's still in daily use. I only had it for a year but as a young chap in my 20's the Manta GTE was fun. Much firmer ride...

    Cars - Form over function

Are you telling me that some silly person has decided that a car should be left parked in neutral ? Damn fools. Obviously never had to park on a hill or an inclined drive. Obviously never had a handbrake cable stretch or snap. Obviously never had to replace a garage door after the car rolls into it...

    Bandsaw conversion

My Milwaukee portable bandsaw which is mainly aimed at metal has a variable speed 0 to 2m/s It works great at the slow end of that range.

    Cars - Form over function

Years ago I sat in the car park at Nice airport doing much the same. I'd rented a Merc but having never driven one before I didn't know where to find the hand brake. I wasn't ignorant of the fact that a handbrake can be on an auxilliary footpedal but it was 10pm at night, pitch black, and that...

    Cars - Form over function

I think they may have dropped the cactus panels because more people loathed the look than liked the utility. And it can't be aerodynamic. But in the spirit of your post, do you remember the Ford Ka ? Starter car for kids with replaceable plastic mouldings on all corners. I put 140,000 miles...

Saw for cutting 5mm mild steel?

Three people have essentially asked you to describe your application. If you give a clear, detailed answer to their questions you'll get the best advice. Just sayin' ...

    mrMDF and Birch PLY question

From the few speakers - including subs - that I've ever opened up, I think MRMDF is the preferred material of the commercial companies who will actually have the resources to have done proper testing of the product's acoustics. MDF is a heavy, "dead" material better at damping vibration and...

W shop / Materials & Finishes Show NEC

A comment from one of the stand staff about their experience of using a spiral block planer stuck in my mind. It cost just under £1000 for a full set of replacement carbide cutters to refresh the block. 96 cutters at £10 apiece. The machine was in use for production, processing hardwood. One...

W shop / Materials & Finishes Show NEC

This was the type of professional show where you could get to see and touch the products in the flesh, but it's all about making contact and setting up future conversations / demos and visits. No one is selling anything that you would pay for and take away from the show. W2000 four years ago...

W shop / Materials & Finishes Show NEC

It was interesting to look at proper commercial / industrial machinery. The build quality and engineering of Martin machines is impressive. Festool were demonstrating their panel saw with the blade retraction system. No cartridges, no damage, reset and back to work in 20...
